Primary teacher Job Description

The Role

Astor International School is recruiting for an early childhood/primary classroom teacher. The successful candidate will be an internationally qualified teacher, with international and enquiry based (IPC/IB) teacher experience.

The Context

Astor opened in August of 2019 to provide quality, affordable education to international students. Astor provides a focused and creative learning environment that specifically grows student understanding in Mathematics, Literacy, Humanities and Science whilst embracing art, music, dance and drama as an important tool in which to explore thinking and learning. By being intentional in our program, students finish at 1pm, allowing them the time needed for external coaching, training and programs that have otherwise not been accommodated for in extended school days.

Main Working Relationships - The Principal / Teaching staff.

We endeavor to provide a close, nurturing, family environment where staff work closely together as a team. Planning and working together collaboratively; with students, parents and staff in partnership to create a dynamic and vibrant learning environment.

Teachers at Astor are responsible for:
Pedagogy

- Have a student-centered pedagogy that leads their practice and gives students the ability to construct and co-construct learning in a personal and collaborative environment.

- Builds healthy and nurturing relationships with all students in their care with the outcome in mind to build students as life-long learners.

- Support students in becoming independent learners.

- Using both formative and summative assessment strategies and information to understand, plan and teach for the differentiated needs of all students.

- Provides appropriate and actionable feedback to learners.

- Utilisingand consistently using reflective practices in all aspects of the learning pathway.

- Promoting student ownership and engagement in all aspects of the curriculum.

- Committed to parent partnerships that include regular feedback, reporting and celebrations.

Curriculum:

- Committed to a high level of curriculum knowledge, including skills, understandings, concepts, values and progressions.

- Utilisingappropriate and effective metacognitive and reflective practices.

- Adapts teaching style and delivery of the curriculum to best meet the learning needs of their class.

- Prepares, presents and communicates reports and assessment data to parents and other stakeholders as required.

- Working with colleagues to plan and develop a curriculum progression that builds throughout the year and grades.

Curriculum delivery:

- Delivering a creative, dynamic, inquiry led IPC curriculum within the teaching day.

- Finds cross curriculum link from the IPC unit to English and math.

- Committed to all meetings and training sessions and parent meetings that sit outside of the classroom timetable.

- Committed to being on campus or engaged in tasks relating to the role from 8:00am - 4:00pm Monday to Friday with the understanding that these times may vary, and necessary responsibilities need to be fulfilled.

- Delivering all aspects of the required curriculum.

- Planning and running trips, camps, performances, and excursions as required.

- Undertake active supervision.

- Provide one ECA per week.

A valued contributor to professional teacher and learning development.

- Actively upskilling and developing personal practice.

- Continually looking for opportunities to improve learning and teaching strategies in keeping with latest research and ’best practice’.

- Developing knowledge and skills related to primary education.

- Actively participating in the school’s appraisal process.

- Personally committed to goal setting and is a ‘life-long’ and reflective learner.

- Committed to contributing to the development and training of colleagues as a coach, mentor and peer.

An integral member of a supportive, collaborative and vibrant school environment.

- Committed to and actively creating an environment that is supportive, positive and respectful.

- Ensures that the classroom and school’s physical environment is one that reflects the values and vision of the school, whilst celebrating learners and the learning process.

- Nurtures positive relationships within the whole school community.

Other projects, duties and responsibilities:

- Having a working knowledge of teachers' professional duties and legal liabilities.

- Representing an awareness and understanding of the stated policies and practices of the school.

- Establishing effective and appropriate relationships with colleagues and parents.

- Upholding a high level of presentation and personal and professional conduct.

- Collaborating with other staff to ensure resources, experience and personal knowledge benefit the school and learners.

- Contributing to the corporate life of the school through effective participation in meetings and management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school.

- Taking part in marketing and liaison activities such as Open Days and events with other stakeholders.

- Any other reasonable request from management or administration to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description.

Qualifications and Experience:

- Native English speaker.

- A minimum 4 year Bachelor in Education degree from an International university or recognised teaching qualification.

- Evidence of continued relevant professional development.

- Experience in teaching primary grades.

- Experience working in international schools.

- Experience working outside of Singapore.

- Experience with a holistic approach to Education.

- Experience with IPC (preferred)

- Must be able to work in Singaporean or PR.
