Assistant Head Teacher

Overall Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Head of Pastoral Care is a branched member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT),and has overall responsibility for the development and implementation of all pastoral policies and practice.
  • This includes the following key expectations of the role and oversight of key positions which impacts pastoral care.
  • It is a highly rewarding role demanding confidentiality and time management which ensures the development and opportunities for enrichment of the whole child. It would be a suitable position for a
  • candidate wanting experience in a Senior Leadership role with a through school insight. Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate and exemplify a passion for implementation of high levels of pastoral care and standards for the success of the individual child.

Safeguarding in School

  • Eventually this role will include responsibility as Designated Safeguard lead. (Attendance of Level 3 DSL course can be supported by the school)
  • Lead and have oversight of targets and attendance of all meetings for key students under the TAC programme (Team Around the Child).
  • Ensure CPOM’s is being used correctly to monitor students of pastoral concern.
  • Analyse and report on CPOM’s data.
  • Analyse pastoral data and report on attendance, lates and any emerging trends.

Pupil Standards, Welfare and Discipline

  • Communicate with Key Stage leads and form tutors on pastoral and behaviour matters
  • Coordinate and implement a whole school and key stage specific behaviour.
  • Have general oversight of school discipline, ensuring that good behaviour is promoted and rewarded, and that any issues are dealt with promptly and fairly, in accordance with School policies
  • Oversee the implementation of School behaviour expectations on a day-to-day basis, and recommend any changes as required
  • Oversee the use of rewards and sanctions, including management of detentions
  • Monitor the use of rewards and sanctions, in liaison with SLT and all staff to ensure that they are being used consistently and fairly across all pupils and groups of pupils.
  • Ensure that pupils take pride in their appearance and being members of the School (particularly at formal events), and take the lead in ensuring the uniform standards are upheld.
  • In conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team, take charge of any issues which might involve the Head’s decision to suspend or take action to expel.

Organisational Responsibilities

  • Oversee and liaise closely with key stage leads on assembly structure.
  • Ensure smooth organisation of house systems through teacher House leaders.
  • Oversee and ensure clear delivery of PSHE programme.
  • Liaise with the lead for physical education, Music, Drama and other relevant staff such as teacher house leaders in the efficient and inclusive organisation of House events.
  • Arrangement of breaktime and lunchtime duty.

Further responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop community partnership with school nurse in relation to pastoral matters and the provision of community workshops for parents.
  • Report to the Principal and work alongside Deputy Head of Academics to ensure Pastoral and academic progress for all students.
  • Management strategy in consultation with SLT and middle leaders.
  • Meet weekly with Key stage leads prior to weekly key stage meetings to inform of the pastoral content.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly, operations and strategy board meetings and direct SLT focus meetings.
  • Update pastoral care section of weekly briefing to staff.
  • On an annual rotation with the Deputy head of academics hold responsibility for daily cover allocation.
  • Support and attend all major school events, always making an effort to contribute towards the improvement of student learning in such events.

Requirements

  • Experience in safeguarding and/ or pastoral care.
  • Strong administrative, organisational, IT and analytical skills
  • Passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child
  • A high level of professionalism and consideration of the well-being of children
  • An ability to speak with conviction and authority on all matters relating to safeguarding and pastoral care,to build confidence amongst stakeholders, and to maintain a culture with safeguarding and pupil welfare at its heart.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an even-handed, sensitive approach, an understanding and empathy with the feelings and motives of others, able to see things from the perspective of others
  • Sound judgement, with the ability to make reasoned, reasonable and balanced decisions
  • The willingness to confront difficult issues and have difficult conversations
  • Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age and ethnic background.
  • Maintain high professional standards of attendance, punctuality, appearance and conduct, and maintain positive and courteous relationships with staff, pupils and parents.
  • A positive and solution-focused attitude to working life.

Job Specification

  • Proven experience in a similar environment will be highly advantageous
  • Appropriate or equivalent degree at either BA, BSc or Masters level.
  • Intrinsic knowledge and experience of Pastoral care
  • Experience in teaching across the whole school in international schools is desirable.
  • Evidence of relevant and challenging continuing professional development
  • Ability to maintain professional courtesy and clientele relationships with families.
  • Ability to seek guidance and ask advice as necessary.
  • Good presentation and communication skills for delivering materials
  • Teaching qualification with QTS
  • Obtained or working towards NPQSL or equivalent preferable
