The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 16-month contract at the English Language and Literature Academic Group.

Project Title: Reading Southeast Asia in the World (1967 – 1990)

Project Introduction: This research project aims to address a crucial gap in current Southeast Asian literary scholarship. Anglophone writing from various countries in the region is typically studied within a national tradition dating from post-independence, which obscures literary exchanges that give rise to Southeast Asia as a broader literary unit. In response, the data generated from this project will provide a clear and holistic picture of how Southeast Asian Anglophone writers are received and studied, in order to theorise Southeast Asia more rigorously as a unit of literary study.

This project will generate a holistic picture of the intra- and extra-regional publication and reception of Anglophone Southeast Asian writers through the following means:

  • Collection of quantitative data about the number, frequency and genre of publication
  • Collection of qualitative data
  • Scans of selected scholarly journals
  • Interviews with scholars and researchers
  • University curricula on Southeast Asian writing

Requirements

  • Able to work cooperatively in teams Proactive, willing to learn, reliable and able to manage concurrent tasks in a timely manner
  • Experience with data analysis and publications an advantage
  • Background knowledge of Southeast Asia or the literary histories of one or more ASEAN countries an advantage
  • Fluency in one other Southeast Asian language (Malay, Filipino, Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia) an advantage

Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Assist with data collection, interview transcription, processing and analysis
  • Assist in the administration and management of project
  • Assist in writing of reports
  • Maintain and document research records
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
