The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 16-month contract at the English Language and Literature Academic Group.
Project Title: Reading Southeast Asia in the World (1967 – 1990)
Project Introduction: This research project aims to address a crucial gap in current Southeast Asian literary scholarship. Anglophone writing from various countries in the region is typically studied within a national tradition dating from post-independence, which obscures literary exchanges that give rise to Southeast Asia as a broader literary unit. In response, the data generated from this project will provide a clear and holistic picture of how Southeast Asian Anglophone writers are received and studied, in order to theorise Southeast Asia more rigorously as a unit of literary study.
This project will generate a holistic picture of the intra- and extra-regional publication and reception of Anglophone Southeast Asian writers through the following means:
- Collection of quantitative data about the number, frequency and genre of publication
- Collection of qualitative data
- Scans of selected scholarly journals
- Interviews with scholars and researchers
- University curricula on Southeast Asian writing
Requirements
- A basic degree from a reputable university in literature, literary studies, history or a related field
- Relevant research experience
- Good interpersonal communication and writing skills Expertise in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Able to work cooperatively in teams Proactive, willing to learn, reliable and able to manage concurrent tasks in a timely manner
- Experience with data analysis and publications an advantage
- Background knowledge of Southeast Asia or the literary histories of one or more ASEAN countries an advantage
- Fluency in one other Southeast Asian language (Malay, Filipino, Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia) an advantage
Responsibilities
- Conduct literature reviews
- Assist with data collection, interview transcription, processing and analysis
- Assist in the administration and management of project
- Assist in writing of reports
- Maintain and document research records
- Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
